First Impressions of Spain

My first impression? Holy Crap, I speak the language here!!! To completely understand this, you have to know that I was in Europe (France and Italy to be exact) for 6 weeks before finally making my way to Spain. No more "Parlez-vous Anglais?" or "Parli inglese?" for me! I can just walk around and ask for whatever I need in the wonderful language of Spanish! It's amazing how similar, yet different, Spain is from everywhere else I've been. Spain might not have the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre, the tiny, tiny, tiny town of Pontlevoy (where I studied in France), the Colosseum, or St. Peter's, but it does have tapas (greatest invention know to mankind - buy a drink and get delicious food...for free!),
paella, La Sagrada Familia in Barcelona (one of the most interesting buildings I have ever seen),
a devious frog that seems to be everywhere except on the facade where it's suppose to be,
and fútbol. And do they ever have fútbol! I could have never imaged the love and passion people here have for fútbol and their team. Being here as Spain makes history has been one of the most amazing things I´ve ever experienced because, let´s be honest, where else could you find an entire country celebrating a goal at the exact same moment, people walking in the streets with their Spainsh flag/cloak waving in the wind, and car horns emitting a song of celebration?
So, needless to say, I've had a great time in Spain so far and I can't wait to see what else Spain has to offer.

  1. Patty - great insight on the importance of soccer here. It truly was special to witness Spain win the World Cup. I am so glad that the students got out and watched the games (if they like the sport or not) because the cultural significance of the event was undeniable. Great post!
