My time in Spain has been amazing. It is nothing like what I expected. The most memorable part of this experience is the “Copa Mundial.” I had been keeping a tab on Spain back in the States, more so than on the U.S. team, but I could not have predicted the excitement and energy I would witness once I arrived here. No words can describe the fervor around Spain’s long overdue success. Even though I am in no way Spanish myself, I feel like I am when watching the “futbol” games. The people here are so welcoming, allowing us “guiris” to delude ourselves into thinking we are Spaniards ourselves. I shout, “yo soy espanol” without any second thought and with minimal looks from the locals. I am so lucky to be a part of this experience.
My only regret is missing the final game in Spain. Our Portugal trip got switched to this weekend, and due to “technical difficulties” with our bus, we were forced to support our “equipo” from the HD televisions of a random Portuguese shopping mall. However, since this is Spain, we were still able to see small groups of soccer fans as we rolled into town at 5 in the morning. I’m glad I got a chance to see Spain’s journey in the World Cup and was in Spain when they won for the first time. Viva Espana!
Oh no - it was so unfortunate the Portugal group did not get to see the final match. As you already know, it was unforgettable. On a positive note, I am sure you will find and create many such moments during your time in Spain (perhaps a Flamenco concert...;-).
